December 2023

'Tis the season of gift giving, although we love to give all year round! With that in mind we once again asked the Crothers community to share a gift with you, something that inspired them or made 2023 a better year all around.

Kicking us off, Isabelle shares her annual gift, a mindset that continues to encourage her. We hope you'll consider these recommendations in the spirit in which they are shared, and that you will enjoy them along with your eggnog or champagne toasts!

We could all use a bit of optimism from time to time. . . here's a podcast series I enjoyed in 2023.

A Bit of Optimism Podcast hosted by Simon Sinek.

My gift this year was finally reading She Said a book that was gifted to me by my mother-in-law a few Christmases ago! It showed me the importance of people speaking out about workplace harassment and related issues. I was inspired by the courage of each person in the book from the reporters to the individuals who gave a voice to those that had previously been silenced.

I found value in Dr. Gary Chapman's 5 Love Languages. It was interesting learning more about my love language and apology language. Even better, was hearing what my life partner's and adult children's love languages are. It definitely helped me express my love for them in a way that they can receive and appreciate it.

The gifts I received this year all revolved around the opportunity to travel.  I was able to take a road trip with my eldest son across the country.  The three days spent in the car laughing, reminiscing and just reveling in each other's company were priceless.  For the first time in 20 years, I traveled out to see my best friend in the Midwest. I am more of a coastal person and prefer to travel to the beach whenever possible, so this was monumental.  My time there was filled with firsts and would recommend a trip to Omaha to anyone who asks.  For those of you who putting off travel plans because its not the right place or the right time, give yourself a gift and move out of your comfort zone and do things you wouldn't normally do and take the opportunity to have different experiences.

Putting myself first has always felt impossible.  I became an exhausted and stressed-out person.  In 2023 I gave myself the gift of time to meditate.  I started using the InsightTimer app.  Slowly it changed my entire perspective on needing to take care of myself first, so that I can show up for all the people that depend on me. Taking the time to clear my mind, relax, and listen to topics important to me has lowered my stress levels, improved my sleep, and made me a happier person in my everyday life.

This year I had a bit of a health scare.  This experience lasted for a little over a couple months.  Getting the news that I was in the clear, powerfully reminded me how in an instant life can change.  I now breathe deeply 3 times when I hug my kids, to be mindful of the gratitude I have for this time.

Now, my kids are rabid animals - One yelling that he wants candy and the other wanting ice cream - all at 7am in the morning.

My daughter’s body has accommodated her new kidney, after some medication fiddling. Her blood levels are in the normal range, and she is living a normal and happy life of a 29 year old.  She goes out and travels more than her parents do!  Knowing your child is healthy and happy is a wondrous gift, one you notice only when it doesn’t exist.

My “gift” in 2023 was one I gave myself of HEALTH! Both my physical health by changing to a completely clean eating lifestyle and (ugh) working out, as well as my mental health by finding a work/life balance (thanks to my Crothers family). It took me 50+ years to do it, but here I am doing it!

One of my favorite authors and podcast people is Krista Tippett, host of OnBeing. I love her book -Becoming Wise: An inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living

She did a TED talk recently that gave me hope and specific ideas for how I want to live in 2024—"Three Practices for Wisdom and Wholeness.”

I was fortunate to hear José Andrés, the founder of the World Central Kitchen, speak at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women in October. Ron Howard directed the movie “We Feed People” about Jose’s life story, his ambition to create the non-profit (WCK) and his heroic efforts to provides meals to all in the aftermath of natural disasters. Truly inspiring!

Grateful To Support Local & Global Organizations

Since our beginnings in 2010, Crothers Consulting has committed to support community initiatives. Because of the trust you, our clients, have placed in us, we continue to support impactful organizations.

This month we gratefully donated to One Simple Wish. Every year nearly 500,000 children are impacted by abuse, neglect and trauma and spend time in our nation’s foster care system. Through them, an innovative wish-granting platform, donors can send some love to a child who needs it.

They also support the over 22,000 young adults who 'age out' of the foster care system when they're 18 years old. They are often still in school or beginning new jobs, and must learn to navigate housing, feeding, transporting, and managing themselves on their own.

The Crothers team brings a wealth of knowledge for leaders, managers and culture. If you are interested in learning how we can uniquely create lasting behavioral shifts with pragmatic solutions or coaching, please contact Isabelle Brennan.

We hope you get some down time to refresh and recharge this holiday season!
